Martin's Photo Diary of a Roadtrip through the American Southwest, Spring 2008

In the Spring of 2008, I spent six weeks weeks in North America - mainly for the celebration of my mother's 90th birthday; but also taking the opportunity to drive, along with my brother Richard, a 4,500 mile road trip, taking in the Desert States of Utah, Arizona and California; returning by way of the Oregon and Washington coasts, with the obligatory stop in Bandon, Oregon. On the trip, which was originally planned to fulfill a thirty-five year ambition to visit Yosemite National Park, we visited Canyonlands (Islands in the Sky and The Needles), Arches National Park, Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, Powell Lake / Page Arizona, Grand Escalante, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Yosemite National park. The original plan was to go via Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, but we cut through Idaho instead - we'll leave the other two for later! The return from Yosemite was two days of driving through Northern California, Oregon and Washington; with a three night stay at Bandon. We were very lucky to be put up for four nights in Oakdale, Ca. by our good and hospitable friends Diane and Randy Walton, who showed us round Yosemite. The rest of the time we stayed in motels - usually taking kitchen or family units, where we could do our own catering.
